Jonathan Leaves Beacon

Departure Without Return Jonathan leaves his estate, servants, reputation, and most of his possessions behind. A Lie to Agnes He promises to return, but his preparations show that he expects the journey to sever his former life. The First Direction East The Endeavor’s departure transforms a private obsession into a public expedition whose consequences cannot be recalled.

The Expedition Reaches Its Limit

The Ship Stops The Endeavor reaches the Grave of Wood but cannot safely continue toward sunlight. Human Scale Restored Captain and crew remain with the ship while only a small party approaches the final threshold. A Necessary Separation The journey divides Jonathan’s path from the practical world that enabled it.

Jonathan Disappears

Into the Sunlit World Jonathan crosses Bright Defile and vanishes from the expedition’s ordinary reality. No Return Route His path is not described as a journey that can simply be reversed. He has crossed into a larger country of truth. A Living Myth His absence creates the possibility that Beacon will remember him as a shadow, rumor, or threat rather than a man.

The Endeavor Returns

Home Without Jonathan Montgomery brings the battered ship and survivors back to Beacon. Wealth in Place of Explanation Gold and curiosities become the public meaning of the expedition, while its deepest events remain unspoken or misunderstood. Survival as Inheritance The ship carries forward Jonathan’s route even though its owner is gone.

New Eastern Voyage

Eleanor Takes the Helm of Purpose Eleanor boards the repaired Endeavor for another eastern expedition. New Maps She acquires occult charts capable of finding places that no longer exist by ordinary geography. East Again Her decision shows that Jonathan’s journey has not ended exploration. It has created a new generation of seekers, less reverent and perhaps no less dangerous.
